MEMORANDUM

TO: All Members Elected to the 105th Congress

FROM: Wilson Livingood, Sergeant at Arms, U.S. House of Representatives

SUBJECT: Distribution of Gallery Seating Tickets for both the First Session of the 105th Congress/Swearing-In Ceremony on January 7, 1997, at 12:00 noon, and the Joint Session of Congress to Count the Electoral Votes on January 9, 1997, at 1:00 p.m.

Tuesday, January 7, 1997, 12:00 noon -- Opening Session Festivities

Each returning Member of the House of Representatives will receive one ticket for a specific Gallery seat for the Swearing-In Ceremony/Opening Session.

Each freshman Member will receive four tickets for the House Gallery for the Swearing-In Ceremony/Opening Session. One of these tickets will be in the freshmen Members’ permanently assigned Gallery, either Gallery 1 or Gallery 11, for the 105th Congress. Unfortunately, neither of these Galleries offers a good view of the Chamber. One of the other tickets that freshmen Members will receive for this Session is from the Senate’s allotment and offers a better view. The other tickets will be standing room and step seats.

The Gallery seat tickets are for the use of a spouse or guest. Each Member will receive one ticket for all future ticketed events such as a Joint Meeting or the President’s State of the Union Address. Members are always seated on the Floor of the Chamber and therefore do not require a ticket for themselves.

Members’ immediate family, aged twelve and under, will be allowed to accompany Members onto the Floor for the Ceremony. Please fill out the attached request form for children’s Floor passes in ADVANCE. The form should be faxed to (202) 225-0890.

Thursday, January 9, 1997, 1:00 p.m. -- Joint Session to Count Electoral Votes

Each Member of the 105th Congress will receive their one Gallery seat ticket for this event.

Ticket Pick-up for Both Events

Members may pick up their tickets and the children’s Floor passes in the Sergeant at Arms office, Room H-124 The Capitol, between December 16 and the Swearing-In Ceremony, weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except holidays. If a staff person is picking up the tickets for you, please send a letter authorizing them to do so. Please call (202) 225-0067 or (202) 225-2456 if you have questions.

CHILDRENS’ FLOOR PASSES FOR THE SWEARING IN CEREMONY

TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1997, AT 12:00 NOON

We will need the bottom of this form completed and returned no later than Monday, December 9, 1996, so that we may honor all requests. It may be faxed to my office at (202) 225-0890. If you have questions, please call my office of Chamber Security at (202) 225-0067or (202) 225-2456.

The childrens’ Floor passes will be processed and available for pick-up by the person you so designate beginning on Monday, December 16, 1996 until the day of the Ceremony, on weekdays (except holidays), between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. They will be in the Sergeant at Arms office, Room H-124 The Capitol.

Thank you for your cooperation. This will enable us to minimize confusion on your special day.
