Temporary Protection After
Insurance Coverage Stops
If your Basic Life and/or any of your optional coverage
terminates for any reason other than waiver, declination,
termination of eligibility for annuity/Workers'Compensation, or
termination of the FEGLI contract, you continue to have life
insurance protection (not accidental death and dismemberment) for
31 days thereafter. Accordingly, if you (or an eligible family
member covered under Option C-Family) should die during this
31-day period, a benefit equal to the amount of your life
insurance (excluding accidental death benefits) is payable,
subject to proof in the usual manner. This death benefit is
payable even if you have applied for, and paid your first premium
for, an individual conversion (direct-pay) policy. However, if
for some reason your agency neglects to provide you with a notice
of your right to convert in a timely manner, this error would not
serve to extend your 31 days of temporary coverage. Also, if you
again become insured as an employee and die during this 31-day
period, only the higher of the two death benefits will be
payable. Furthermore, if an individual conversion (directpay)
policy is issued before your death (or the death of an eligible
family member) during the 31-day period, the FEGLI death benefit
will be reduced by the amount of insurance for which the
individual policy is issued, unless the individual policy is
surrendered without claim to the insurance company which issued
it.
