American Express Procedures for Terminating Accounts

As a departing Member of Congress, you may use your American Express Government Card for official business expenses up until midnight, January 2, 1997. Effective January 3, 1997, your card will be automatically terminated.

As an employee of a departing Member of Congress, your American Express Government Card will be put into a "suspension" file at American Express, effective January 3, 1997, and remain there until March 31, 1997. Upon becoming employed by another Member of Congress, Committee, or Officer, please ask him or her to follow the instructions under General Information, to let us know that you may continue to have an American Express Government Card. Upon receipt of this letter, we will ask American Express to reactivate your card. If we do not hear from you, your card will be automatically terminated on March 31, 1997.

As an employee of the House, if you would like to cancel your American Express Government Card, please forward a letter requesting cancellation to Carol Kresge, House Program Coordinator, Office of Finance, 263 Cannon House Office Building.

Remember, the cardholder is responsible for making direct payment to American Express. The Office of Finance cannot pay cardholder's bills for them. American Express will send cardholders a suspension notice at 60 days, suspend cardholders accounts at 75 days, and cancel accounts at 120 days. Accounts that are 120 days past due, have a balance over $100.00, and are in a canceled status, will be referred to a credit bureau.

It is the cardholder's responsibility to ensure American Express has your correct forwarding address. Please contact Cathy Young at American Express, at 1-800-492-4922, ext. 3816 or 1-602-492-3816.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact Carol Kresge, House Program Coordinator, at x56587.
